The terms of your transfer limit may not allow you to use much of it up by downloading files yourself.

Look for a phone number that you can call if you need help in a hurry rather than just using email, and make sure this phone number is usable at weekends too.

See that the costs charged if you register a new domain name (other than the one you will be given like webhostingcompany.com/mysitename for example) through the host is not much higher than you would have to pay by registering it independently of them. And if it is, check that they do indeed allow you to do this.

Unless you have a lot of experience already as a webmaster, make sure you will be given a control panel.

Check for POP email account availability on your site, and that they are not website access mail only.

Some providers will limit hits on a site, or terminate your account if you do not log in or get visitors for a certain time frame.

Don’t choose a host who will not give a money back guarantee, and watch out for ones which demand a long term commitment with them as a condition, as you may well want to switch hosts at a later date, and lack of domain transfer options will then be a headache.

If you’re not so sure, go elsewhere

So remember that there is an abundance of potential hosts that are vying for your ecommerce hosting plans, and therefore be sure to shop around for a good deal before you commit yourself, just as you would with anything else.

Honest hosting companies (and most are) will be those whose flashy wording on the pages do not differ considerably from the text in their terms of use and acceptable use policies, some even have forums up where complaints can be read by others. This should not put you off if you see some gripes, as no company can always get everything right. Moreover, if they are confident enough in their packages to show the complaints of some of their site owners’ community, then that can’t be such a bad thing.

Not many do this however, so it’s a good idea to read some of the postings on independent forums and message boards that exist for the subject of web hosting, as these can be very illuminating indeed at times.
